What Is the KeryFlex Nail Restoration System?

KeryFlex Nail Restoration system is a painless, in-office application that restores the appearance of an individual’s natural nails. The system allows Dr. Shastri at Chelsea Foot and Ankle to remodel damaged nails affected by fungus, defects, or trauma. Unlike a rigid acrylic nail, composite resin creates a flexible but durable, non-porous nail. This allows the restored nail to bend with the natural movement of the toes and allows for the remaining nail to grow out naturally. KeryFlex offers immediate cosmetic improvement, providing a natural-looking nail after one visit.

The KeryFlex nail application is a cosmetic procedure ideal for any individual with mild to moderate nail changes due to the following:

  • Nail fungus
  • Injury
  • Spoon shaped nails
  • Brittle and splitting nails
  • Horizontal ridges
  • Discolored nails

Call Chelsea Foot and Ankle at (646) 929-4149 in New York City for for KeryFlex Nail Restoration treatment.

How Does the KeryFlex Nail Restoration System Work?

The KeryFlex Nail Restoration system applies a resin material (impregnated with the antifungal ingredient Piroctone) to the affected nail, which is then hardened with a UV light. The resin material will “bond” to the natural nail, similar to a dentist bonding a tooth. The new nail is then smoothed and shaped to appear natural. At least 15% of the natural nail is recommended since KeryFlex does not bind to the skin.

The KeryFlex nail is unaffected by acetone, nail polish, or detergents. Nail polish may be applied immediately after completing the KeryFlex Nail Restoration procedure.

Can KeryFlex Nails Treat Fungal Infections or Other Issues?

The KeryFlex Nail system is a cosmetic procedure, so it is not a cure for fungal infections. However, it can aid in fungal treatment as it is compatible with topical antifungal medications applied around the cuticle area. KeryFlex Nails may also be applied directly following laser therapy and between treatments.

The KeryFlex nail, while a cosmetic enhancement, can help protect natural nails from damage as they heal and grow.

What Are the Benefits of the KeryFlex Nail Restoration System?

The KeryFlex Nail Restoration system can greatly improve the appearance of damaged or broken toenails. If you want a natural-looking solution to damaged or unsightly nails, KeryFlex can enhance the appearance of your toenails.

Other benefits include:

  • Immediate and long-lasting cosmetic enhancements
  • It looks and feels like your natural nails
  • The flexibility that allows the restored nails to bend with movement
  • It is compatible with human tissue, so it will not cause irritation or further damage
  • It allows your nails to grow out naturally without incurring more damage
  • It is non-porous, so moisture cannot get trapped between your natural nails and restored nails
  • It is compatible with most antifungal treatments, giving you aesthetic improvement and protection

Am I A Candidate for the KeryFlex Nail Restoration System?

If you have damaged or diminished toenails due to trauma, infection, or defects and wish for cosmetic improvement, KeryFlex can help restore the look of your nails while your natural nails have time to grow and heal.

KeryFlex Nails are not for everyone. If patients have peripheral vascular disease, arterial insufficiency, peripheral neuropathy, suspicious pigmented lesions on the nail, or in-grown toenails, KeryFlex is not advisable. Additionally, KeryFlex cannot bind to skin tissue, so patients must have the presence of at least 15% of their natural nail.

KeryFlex Nail Restoration System FAQ

How long will my KeryFlex nails last?

Typically, patients have their KeryFlex nails reapplied every six to eight weeks, although this varies with the individuals as well as if any trauma has occurred to the KeryFlex nails.

How can I prepare my natural nails before KeryFlex is applied?

It is recommended that patients do not apply any products to the natural nail two days prior to application of the KeryFlex to ensure proper bonding.

Are there any activity or footwear restrictions once my KeryFlex nails are applied?

It is recommended that the patient wears comfortable, well-fitting footwear, as excess friction from shoes may cause KeryFlex nails to chip or crack. Sandals and open-toed shoes are acceptable, as KeryFlex is formulated to resist sun damage and yellowing.

Activities that increase the risk of friction or damage to the nail, such as long-distance running, may weaken the integrity of the KeryFlex nails.

How is a KeryFlex nail removed?

KeryFlex nails are permanently bound to the natural nail. To remove the nail, our doctors can file the artificial nail until it is no longer attached to the natural nail. Patients are not advised to trim, cut, or try to remove the artificial nail on their own.

If you wish to trim the length of your KeryFlex nail, you may file it gently with a nail file or emery board to maintain normal length.
